The Optimist Club of Uxbridge was chartered by Optimist International in January of 1969. It is a voluntary organization of community oriented people with a passionate desire to make our community and the world a better place for our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
The purpose of the Optimist Club of Uxbridge is to develop Optimism as a philosophy of life; to promote an active interest in civic affairs; to inspire respect for the law; to promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people; to aid and encourage the development of youth in the belief that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well-being of man, his community and world.
Our club has been involved in many projects over the last 40 years with the goal of taking part in activities and initiatives designed to better serve our community and make a positive difference in the lives of the youth of our community.
All money raised through fundraising stays in Uxbridge to support youth-centered activities.
Some of the projects we have sponsored over the last 40 years are:
Oratorical contests; Essay contest; Music Scholarship Fund; Established the Uxbridge Soccer Club; Local Youth Bands; Fire Safety House; Kids' Triathlon; VIP Programme, Girl Guides of Canada; Scouts Canada; Optimist Flyers Running Club; Baseball League; Huck Finn day; Graduation Awards; Hockey Teams; Swim Club; Lacrosse League; Optimist Junior Golf League; Jericho Camp; Claremont Conservation Area; Uxbridge Youth Cenre and more.
Our dedicated members have a great time running our fun(d)raising activities. These include our Annual Duck Derby which sees 3000 ducks racing down the Uxbridge Brook. This event coupled with our free Family Fun afternoon has become a great spring event that our town has come to love and support.
Our annual Christmas tree sale offers its own challenges, such as trying to stuff an 8 foot tree into the trunk of small a car. Our sales have grown every year due to the fact our prices are great and we have the BEST trees around! People have come to trust the quality of out trees so much, that they take them home still wrapped in the twine.
Our most recent gift to our community is the Fantasy of Lights held in Elgin Park the week leading up to Christmas. With the support of community organizations, churches, schools, businesses as well as individual residents, Elgin Park is transformed nightly into a Christmas wonderland. Free will offerings received during this event go back into the community to further benefit our wonderful town.
